Is Erasing Original Sin The Same Thing As Being Saved?
I know some Missouri Synod Lutherans, very fundamentalist Christians. They get their babies baptised as newborns, and they say this is to rid them of Original Sin.

But a whole lot of other branches of Christianity don’t agree that water baptism saves.

My question is this: Is erasing Original Sin the same thing as being saved? I mean, a baby is perfectly sinless at that point, no longer having Original Sin and not being capable of sinning at that age.

Yes, yes, I know that many believe water baptism doesnt save. Please dont repeat that over and over.

I want to know if erasing Original Sin is the same thing as being saved, that’s all.
EDIT: To M.S. Yes, I know there is no such thing as Original Sin in Islam. There isn’t in Judaism either. But I am asking Christians for their doctrine now.

Er, roughly, more-or-less, yes, kind of, sort of, not really. :-p

As I’m sure you know, Christianity is EXTREMELY diverse.

Catholics and Orthodox believe that Original Sin is wiped away with baptism, yet "salvation" is seen more as a process, a life changing era of time lasting from our conversion (or infant baptism) to our death bed. We don’t believe in "once saved, always saved" as if we’re given a Get Out of Jail Free Card at the altar call.

Traditionally minded Protestants (such as the Lutherans, Methodists, and especially Anglicans) tend to believe similarly to Catholics, however more emphasis is on the saving act of a profession of faith rather than the subsequent sanctification.

Then you have the more novel Christians such as Jehovah’s Witnesses and Mormons who deny there even exists an Original Sin.

So in summary, it really depends on the theological outlook of the particular Christian in question. If the particular Christian believes in the necessity of baptism, it’s pretty safe to assume that they believe it’s necessary *because* it washes away Original (and Particular) Sin.

Edit: See what I mean? Look at the answers you’re receiving. :-p

Enjoy the can of worms you’ve opened.

Yes, erasing the ‘bretheren accuser’ within you, leads to enlightenment/Grace/Christhood/Oneness with God

The original sin was ‘I-thought’ hence pride was born

edit: Erasing seperation (illusion of sin) installed from ‘I-thought’ can only be done through baptism of the Holy FIRE

Accepting Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior is known as being saved. He alone erases the original sin of Adam

Please read Romans 5

Rom 5:18 Therefore as by the offence of one [judgment came] upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one [the free gift came] upon all men unto justification of life.

Rom 5:19 For as by one man’s disobedience many were made sinners, so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

======

1Cr 15:45 The Scriptures tell us, "The first man, Adam, became a living person." [fn] But the last Adam–that is, Christ–is a life-giving Spirit.

1Cr 15:46 What came first was the natural body, then the spiritual body comes later.

1Cr 15:47 Adam, the first man, was made from the dust of the earth, while Christ, the second man, came from heaven.

1Cr 15:48 Every human being has an earthly body just like Adam’s, but our heavenly bodies will be just like Christ’s.

1Cr 15:49 Just as we are now like Adam, the man of the earth, so we will someday be like Christ, the man from heaven.

1Cr 15:50 What I am saying, dear brothers and sisters, is that flesh and blood cannot inherit the Kingdom of God. These perishable bodies of ours are not able to live forever.

1Cr 15:51 But let me tell you a wonderful secret God has revealed to us. Not all of us will die, but we will all be transformed.

No such thing. The bible doesn’t have anything in it to support this practice.

Water baptism can’t erase any sins, not even original sin.

A person who says water baptism can erase original sin, hasn’t read the Bible, since the Bible says that only the blood of Jesus pays for any sins.

Yes, erasing original sin is the same as being saved. There is more to answering your question but I won’t bore you with the important details.
rayzinside | Nov 18, 2009

I have not heard of "erasing original sin." One is saved when they have accepted Jesus in their heart, as the Son of God and their personal Savior; and they are baptized in the Spirit. The person can accept Jesus all they want, but when they SINCERELY mean it is when Jesus will set them free. Don’t be fooled.. You will definitely feel when this happens. And you will forget the day it happened..

baptism happens when you have been saved and you repent of your sins. so that up there is a bunch a nonsense
Sherry L | Nov 18, 2009

No it is not the same, CindyComesBack:

True, that Jesus’ death negated Adam’s sin, we are still held accountable for our own sins. And if we sin willfully after coming to the truth, we crucify afresh our Lord.

No its not.

Missouri Synod Lutherans are not fundamentalist Christians.

Everyone who was Baptized in the Bible was:

1. Immersed

2. Immersed after they made a decision to repent from their sins and ask Jesus to save them from their sins.

The infant sprinkling practiced by Lutherans, isn’t baptism in the Biblical sense.

2 Samuel chapter 12 teaches us that babies who die as infants go to heaven without any need for baptism or any other religious ceremony.

Infant baptism got its start in the 4th century after Theodosius declared that everyone in the Roman Empire had to become a Christian. After a while everyone was baptized except the newborn babies, so to control people from cradle to the grave, they started sprinkling water on the heads of babies and calling it baptism.

The Greek word in the New Testament transliterated into Baptism is Baptizo or Bapto and those Greek words mean "to immerse" or "to plunge into water".

1- NO ORGIONAL SIN,
2-Baptism in Islam is total body wash at poverty ages of 11 to 14,
faith has to be built on truth

Well all the Christians I know believe this same thing- this is why they christen/baptize their children, to clean them from Christian doctrine of original sin, this is when the child is born again in the Christian faith.

Being saved depends on your status at the time of your death. Just because a Christian baby is baptise, or a Muslim baby does not sin, this is seperate from the actions in the rest of their life. If those children grow up with faith in God, and they are righteous people, then that is being saved. But if they do not make it to grow up, and they die as babies, i think they will be saved anyway.

No, its not the same. erasing the Original Sin is done by Baptism. Everyone is born with the Original Sin by our origins, Adam and Eve (who as you know sinned). You can be baptised and still not get saved. If you live a pure life according to God’s way and truly believe in Him then you will be saved.

As a Catholic we believe that the Sacrament of Baptism does save through the washing away of sins, this also includes the original sin we are all born into. It does not surprise me that that their are Lutherans would also believe this concept. When Adam chose to disobey God his fall caused us all to be born without the original justice that mankind once had before the sin of Adam and Eve. And it’s not the water that saves, it’s the holy Spirit that descends upon the person after being Baptized that saves them.

1 Pt 3:21

This prefigured baptism, which saves you now. It is not a removal of dirt from the body but an appeal to God for a clear conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
